At Japanese schools, students are said to learn not only their subjects but also the habits of group life. The rota system, in which the students themselves clean the classroom and prepare the school lunch, is a typical example.

Because the rota comes around in turn, every student experiences the same tasks. The idea that you tidy the place you use yourself carries over into life at home as well.

Club activities after school are another centre of school life. The range of activities is broad, from sport to music, and they also become a chance to learn manners through the relationship between older and younger members.

Many junior and senior high schools have uniforms, and people have pointed out the advantage of not having to choose clothes every morning. At the same time, some question the very detailed rules, and a growing number of schools are reviewing them.

In this way, Japanese school life keeps changing little by little while preserving forms handed down over a long time. What matters, perhaps, is to let the students themselves think about the meaning of each custom.
